Car window tinting has become extremely popular in Sydney, not just for style but also for heat reduction, UV protection, privacy, and interior protection. But before you tint your vehicle, it's essential to understand the NSW legal tinting laws — especially as rules are enforced actively through vehicle inspections, pink slips, and roadside checks.
The NSW Roads & Maritime tinting regulations help ensure road safety, visibility, and compliance. This updated 2025 guide breaks everything down clearly so you know exactly what is legal and what may result in fines or tint removal orders.
All tint laws in NSW are based on VLT (Visible Light Transmission). VLT = the percentage of light allowed to pass through the glass and tint combined.
Example: 35% VLT means 35% of outside light enters the vehicle.
A tint strip across the top is allowed. The tinted strip must not go below the top 10% of the windshield. No full windshield tint is permitted. This ensures driver visibility, especially at night or during rain.
Legal VLT: 35%. This level balances privacy + clear vision and is the most commonly installed legal tint for front windows in NSW.
Legal VLT: 20%. These windows may be darker than the front, offering better privacy for passengers and personal belongings.
Legal VLT: 20%. However, if your car has no outside rear-view mirrors, you cannot tint the rear window darker than 35%. Most Sydney vehicles do have side mirrors, so 20% is legal in nearly all cases.

No. 5% VLT (limo tint) is not legal on any passenger vehicle windows in NSW. It reduces visibility significantly, is considered a road safety risk, will fail pink slip inspection, and can result in fines and defect notices.
However, 5% tint may be allowed on certain vehicles (e.g., hearses, some commercial or private security fleet vehicles) under specific exemptions. For standard cars → 5% is not legal.
Many newer vehicles come with factory-coloured glass which is already around 70–75% VLT. When adding film on top, make sure the final VLT meets NSW limits. A professional installer will measure this before installation. Attempting DIY without a meter can accidentally make the car illegal.
NSW also regulates reflective or mirror-look tint. Tint must not be overly reflective — films that look chrome, silver, or mirrored can be illegal. This protects road users from sun glare reflection hazards. If you want heat rejection without reflection, consider Ceramic Tint, which blocks infrared heat efficiently without a mirror look.
Drivers with certain medical conditions (such as UV sensitivity, lupus, dermatological disorders) may apply for VLT exemptions. Requirements: a doctor's medical certificate, application to Transport for NSW, and approval before installation. Not all requests are granted, but exemptions exist to support medical needs.
